Mother's Day Meditation
In Genesis 1:27 we read of the creation of our first parents: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Humanity, in both sexes, is God’s image. God is the author of true manhood; likewise, God is the author of true womanhood.
In a world in which many struggle for identity, with the very concepts of “man” and “woman” up for debate, studying the character and attributes of God yields fruit for men who yearn to be the man God wants them to be. Simultaneously, God’s character and attributes are a goldmine for women who desire to be the woman God has created them to be.
God’s tenderness towards his people is communicated with the language of a mother caring for her child (Isaiah 66:13), God’s fierce defense of his people is compared to that of a mother bear robbed of her cubs (Hosea 13:8), God’s care of his people is likened to a mother hen who shelters her young (Luke 13:34)
As we consider God’s tenderness and compassion toward us, I’m reminded of the blessing He has given us in the gift of mothers.
Mothers, we are indebted to you for your unrelenting commitment to us. We resist you, struggle against you, take you for granted, and still you rush to our aid when we are hurt, you rouse yourself to our defense when we are threatened, and even when you are completely frazzled you comfort and reassure us when we are frightened. You bear in your body the scars testifying to your sacrifices for us.
In all this and more, you teach us about and point us to God as the one who cares for us with a tenacity and commitment that eclipses your own. And for this we are profoundly grateful.
Mothers, we salute you.
But Mother’s Day is not a happy day for every woman. Whether it is an aching for the child you never had, or the pain of past experiences or the hurt of present realities, we don’t want you to feel lost in the shuffle: We love you, too.
I offer this video as a message of appreciation and encouragement this Mother’s Day…
This Mother’s Day, even as we rightly honor the mothers in our midst, let us pray for them. Mothers, may you grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and may you increasingly model God’s character to us. Happy Mother’s Day!
